Devote yourselves to prayer; stay alert in it with thanksgiving. Colossians 4:2
One of the reasons why prayerlessness is such an obstacle is because when Satan takes aim at us, none of the following will help to keep us out of a snare if we're not in constant communication with God:
1) Discipline. At times of great temptation and weakness, discipline can fly like a bird out the nearest window.
2) Past lessons. We don't tend to think straight when we get a surprise attack.
3) What is best for us. Human nature is far too self-destructive to choose what is best at our weakest moments.
Prayer lets us walk in peace and victory even when walking through a war zone.
