INTRODUCTION – GOALS FOR A HEART LIKE HIS

Today will begin a 10-week study on the life of King David - "A man after God's own heart." Today we will start with the Introduction.

INTRODUCTION – GOALS FOR A HEART LIKE HIS

1 Samuel 13:14
David was a man after God’s own heart.
Judges 21:25
Everyone did as he saw fit – complete anarchy.
1. Jeremiah 10:23 – we are to have lives under the umbrella of God’s authority. God has a very direct purpose for our lives.
2. 1 Samuel 1:9-11 – Ruth was the great grandmother of David. Prevalence does not mean permission. The Nazarite vow is the vow of consecration to God. Get in the habit of taking your bitterness of soul to the Savior. Take God your very specific needs.
1 Samuel 1:27 – Hannah acknowledged that her son came from God’s hand.
1 Samuel 2:1, 19 – Hannah got to see Samuel once a year.
3. David responded to God in authentic worship.
1 Samuel 2:11 – Samuel ministered to the LORD (or worshipped the LORD). The word “worship” means to bow down and lay prostrate. Hannah represented authentic worship.
4. 1 Samuel 3:1, 19-21 – God found a heart in Samuel that was going to be receptive to His Word. God reveals Himself to us through His Word.
5. 1 Samuel 10:20-24 – Israel had demanded a king. Saul hid himself among the baggage; scared of the responsibility that God was about to place on him. Israel had rejected God; they came to Him with the wrong idea and the wrong motive.
6. 1 Samuel 12:20 – When you have really blown it, turn back and admit that you have done wrong, and let God restore you right here. Go back and run to God as quickly as you can.
1 Samuel 12:22 – Because God is faithful, He will not reject His people. Even when we are faithless, He is obligated to us by His great name. The LORD is pleased to make us His own.
1 Samuel 12:23 – When a brother or sister has blown it, it is a sin against the LORD not to pray for them. Our responsibility is to stay on our knees; to get in the gap and pray for them to be restored. Take them by the hand and walk with them on the right path. We are completely freed when we turn and repent from sin.
7. 1 Samuel 13:11-14 – Saul jumped ahead of God and had been very presumptuous. He had a half-hearted response to God. God set over His kingdom a man after His own heart.
We will see David’s life – David’s God – and ourselves.
We cannot afford to be out from under the umbrella of God’s authority.
Pray that our hearts will be remodeled after God’s own heart.
