DIVORCE AND REMARRIAGE - PART 2
(Matthew 19:9)
"And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”
Jesus states in verse 8 that Moses "permitted" divorce because of the hardness of the people’s hearts, but from the beginning it was not so. Divorce was a last resort response to hard-hearted sexual immorality.
Both here and in Matthew 5:32, Jesus includes the "exception clause" of sexual immorality, clearly permitting the innocent party in such a divorce to remarry without incurring the stigma of one who "commits adultery."
