John 5:39 The Jewish religious leaders of Jesus’ day diligently searched the OT Scriptures, but did not see Jesus as the Messiah and did not believe in Him (v. 38). There are also those today who master the Scriptures but do not allow the Scriptures to master them. God doesn’t promise to bless Bible reading but, rather, Bible heeding (Rev. 1:3; James 1:22–25).
John 5:40 Their problem was not a lack of evidence; it was a lack of willingness to consider any evidence that would bring them to Christ.
John 5:41 Christ said He did not receive testimony from men (v. 34) nor honor from men (v. 41), meaning He did not seek either.
