Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”
The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”
Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”
JOHN 5:5-8 NKJV
John 5:6, 7 Why ask a sick man if he wants to be healed? Some accuse the sick man of losing hope, but he is at the pool and is trying to be the first to get into the moving water (“while I am coming” in v. 7). Christ asks to verify that the man does indeed want to be healed and to focus his mind on the One able to heal.
John 5:8 The bed was a pallet, which was standard furniture for the people of Judea.
