You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.
JOHN 5:33-35 NKJV
John 5:33, 34 You have sent to John: The religious leaders sent a delegation to interrogate John (1:19). he has borne witness: The testimony of John was that Jesus was the living Lord (1:27, 34; 3:31) and the dying Lamb (1:29). Jesus declares that witness to be true.
John 5:35 Jesus is the Light (1:4, 5). John was a lamp. He was: Jesus used the past tense because by this time John’s work had been ended either by imprisonment or by death.
