So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
JOHN 4:5-9 NKJV
John 4:5 Jacob had purchased a parcel of ground (Gen. 33:18, 19), which he bequeathed on his deathbed to Joseph (Gen. 48:21, 22).
John 4:6 the sixth hour: According to the Jewish system of reckoning time, the sixth hour was noon. By the Roman system it was 6 P.M. John seems to be using the Roman system (1:39).
John 4:7–9 Samaritans: When Assyria conquered the northern kingdom in 722 B.C., it exported half of the population to another country and imported Gentiles. The Jews who remained in the Northern Kingdom intermarried with the incoming foreigners; thus, they lost their racial purity. These racially mixed Jews were the Samaritans. When Babylon conquered and carried off the Judeans of the Southern Kingdom, they remained unalterably Jewish. After returning to the Holy Land, the pure Jews would have nothing to do with the Samaritans. To make matters worse, the Samaritans built a rival temple on Mount Gerizim. As a result of all this, the Judeans and the Samaritans hated each other.
