This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.
After this He went down to Capernaum, He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days.
JOHN 2:11-12 NKJV
John 2:11 Signs (Gk. semeion): In the Gospel of John the miracles of Jesus are called signs to indicate that these miracles point to His Messiahship. There are seven signs in John, which are an organizing principle of this Gospel (4:46–54; 5:1–9; 6:1–14; 6:15–21; 9:1–7; and 11:38–44). Here the text specifically mentions that the sign signified Christ’s glory, that is, His deity. When He transformed water into wine He demonstrated His creative power. He did in a moment what is ordinarily done in weeks or in months. Milton said, “The conscious water blushed when it saw its Maker.” This is the first time the text says that His disciples believed in Him. Following sometimes precedes believing and believing sometimes precedes following.
John 2:12 down: Cana was in the highlands and Capernaum was on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, which was below sea level. To go from Cana to Capernaum they had to go “down.” Jerusalem, on the other hand, was situated on the top of a hill and one had to go "up" to get there (2:13).
