That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

John 1:9 In order to give due notice to the incarnation of Jesus, this verse may be rephrased: “That was the true Light coming into the world, which enlightens every man.” Jesus became man in order to reveal the truth to all people. Jesus Christ gives light to every human being by being the Creator. Creation gives light to every one on the earth that there is a Creator in heaven (Rom. 1:20). The inclusion of all people is in contrast to the exclusivism of the ancient world. The Jewish prophets taught and many Jewish people believed that in the last days Zech. 14 would be fulfilled and that Gentiles would be converted. This is in contrast to the Greek and Roman world. The Greek world never dreamed that knowledge was for every person. The Romans looked down on barbarians as the lesser breed without the law. Jesus Christ came to be the light to everyone, though not all would receive His light; this does not mean that all people would believe. John’s part was to bear witness to that light. And we, today, should use every opportunity to reflect the light. Depending on the context, world can refer to (1) the universe; (2) the earth; (3) humanity; or (4) the human system opposed to God.
