One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.
Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone).
JOHN 1:40-42 NKJV
John 1:40–42 An early example of personal evangelism: Andrew brought his brother Simon the Good News, describing Jesus as the Messiah. Andrew appears two more times in the Gospel of John (6:4–9; 12:20–22); both times he is bringing someone to Jesus. Notice how Jesus uniquely meets the needs of each one. To Andrew He showed His humility. To Peter He showed His ability to change character. To Philip He showed His authority. To Nathanael He will show His omniscience. The testimony of each climaxes with the Son of God. Cephas is the Aramaic word for “rock” (Matt. 16:18). Jesus saw in Simon a rocklike character that would eventually enable him to become a leader and faithful witness.
