And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”
The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
JOHN 1:32-37 NKJV
John 1:32–34 He who baptizes with (Gk. en) the Holy Spirit: Seven times the NT mentions this ministry of Jesus. Five are prophetic (Matt. 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; John 1:33; Acts 1:5), one is historical (Acts 11:16–18), and one is doctrinal (1 Cor. 12:13). Although the English translations vascillate between “with” and “in,” the Greek consistently uses en which speaks of the sphere into which Christ baptizes. This action of the Messiah did not occur while He was on the earth. The baptism in the Holy Spirit first occurred at Pentecost (Acts 1:5; 11:15, 16) and became the common reality of all Christians at the time of the new birth (1 Cor. 12:13).
John 1:35 One of the two disciples of John the Baptist was Andrew (v. 40). The other is not named but was probably John, the author of this Gospel.
John 1:36, 37 John was willing to lose his disciples if they followed Jesus. After John introduces Jesus, he fades out of the picture in the Gospel of John except for one mention at the end of ch. 3 (vv. 22–36). followed Jesus: The disciples at this point not only physically followed Jesus at that time, but with John’s blessing they changed their allegiance to the Lord.
