Matthew 24:7-8 (NKJV)
For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.
This paragraph describes things that are characteristic of the end times generally. Verse 7, with its nation … against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, seems to be an advance over v. 6; they seem to be wars on a broader or worldwide scale. The famines, pestilences, and earthquakes are more fully described in Rev. 6:1; 8:5–13; 9:13–21; 16:2–21. The noun sorrows of v. 8 is literally “birth pangs.” The earth continually has birth-pangs today (Rom. 8:22); during the coming seven year tribulation, these “sorrows” will increase in intensity and frequency until the kingdom age or time of regeneration is born (Matt. 19:28; Acts 3:21).
