AS IT WAS IN THE DAYS OF LOT (Part 10)

AS IT WAS IN THE DAYS OF LOT (Part 10)

SMOKE RISING

Early the next morning Abraham got up and went to the place where he had stood before the LORD. He looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and all the Jordan Valley, and saw smoke rising like that of a furnace. When God destroyed the cities, He remembered זָכַרזָכַרמַזְכִּיר [zakar /zaw·kar/] what Abraham had asked and spared Lot’s life. When Abraham saw the smoke, he must have known the truth: there were not even ten righteous in the city (Genesis 18:32). If it were not for Abraham, Lot would have died with the other inhabitants.

remembered: Transliteration: Strong’s H2142 זָכַרזָכַרמַזְכִּיר [zakar /zaw·kar/] v. A Primitive root; TWOT 551; GK 2349 and 2350 and 4654; 233 occurrences; AV translates as “remember” 172 times, “mention” 21 times, “remembrance” 10 times, “recorder” nine times, “mindful” six times, “think” three times, “bring to remembrance” twice, “record” twice, and translated miscellaneously eight times. 1 to remember, recall, call to mind. 1A (Qal) to remember, recall. 1B (Niphal) to be brought to remembrance, be remembered, be thought of, be brought to mind. 1C (Hiphil) 1c1 to cause to remember, remind.1c2 to cause to be remembered, keep in remembrance. 1c3 to mention. 1c4 to record. 1c5 to make a memorial, make remembrance.
The word “remembered” transliterates as Strong’s H2142 zakar /zaw·kar. Genesis 19:29 states “God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow.” When Yahweh remembers, action always follows; He never forgets His people. Whenever He remembers, we can assume a subsequent action on His part (Genesis 8:1; 19:29; 30:22; Exodus 6:5-6; Numbers 10:9). Yahweh remembered Abraham, took action, and made a way of escape for Lot and his family out of Sodom. Almost every time we see a reference to the LORD remembering, He is about to stretch forth His mighty arm and swing into action. His memory is eternal and unconfined by time.
