IN THE NAME OF THE LORD (James 5:14-15).

IN THE NAME OF THE LORD (James 5:14-15).
The entire context of James 5:13-20 implies that the healing promised by God is for a person whose sickness is a result of sin, and who confesses the sin to the elders. The praying of the elders over him and anointing him with oil is to be done "in the name of the Lord." It was to be done by His authority and obedience to His Word. Oil was sometimes used by the apostles when effecting miraculous cures (Mark 6:13). The healing power was not in the oil, but the oil symbolized the Holy Spirit in His healing ministry (1 Corinthians 12:9). It is a prayer pf faith because it is based on the promise of God's Word. The elders can pray with complete assurance because God has promised to raise up the man when the conditions described have been fully met.
SUMMARY: Verses 14 and 15 apply to a case where a person is sick as a direct result of some sin. When they realize this and repent, they should call for the elders of the assembly and make a full confession to them. The elders should then pray over them anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. They can pray for their recovery in faith, since God promises to heal the person.
