JAPHETH [JAY fehth] — one of the three sons of Noah, usually mentioned after
his two brothers Shem and Ham (Gen. 5:32; 6:10; 1 Chr. 1:4). Japheth and his
wife were two of the eight people who entered the ark and were saved from the
destructive waters of the Flood (Gen. 7:7; 1 Pet. 3:20).
Japheth’s descendants spread over
the north and west regions of the earth: “The sons of Japheth were Gomer,
Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras” (1 Chr. 1:5). The Medes,
Greeks, Romans, Russians, and Gauls are often referred to as his descendants.
