CHRIST’S INVITATION

CHRIST’S INVITATION

Peter was still invited to “follow” after his horrible faux pas. I am intrigued that Peter actually heard the invitation to follow three times before Christ ascended to the right hand of the Father: Matthew 4:19, this passage, and John 21:19. Almost as if he were getting a crash course in Follow 101, Follow 202, and Follow 303. The first one was to follow Him as a disciple. The second one was to follow Him with a cross. The third one was to follow Him to death. Not coincidentally, tradition teaches that Peter indeed ended up following Christ to the death . . . on a cross.
Developing the mind-set of one who is continually taking up his cross and following Christ is the heart of having “in mind the things of God” (Matt. 16:23) rather than man.
When we surrender to carrying our crosses and following Him, we identify with Him.
